Exactly a year ago from today, on the 28th of September 2009, Ceylan was killed in the country side of a south eastern city of Turkey.
She was a twelve years old Kurdish girl, who had told her mother to cook spaghetti for lunch right before going out.
She was killed by an explosion, caused by the drop of a mortar shell. Her mother carried Ceylan’s body, scattered around in pieces, in her skirt, for autopsy.
Over the past year, not a single person have been called in by the prosecuting attorney. In contrast to the official police report stating that Ceylan hit a misplaced bomb while walking, an independent report states that the explosion happened near the body and Ceylan was in a defense position, trying to protect her face with her arms, while the explosion took place.
Over the past year, Ceylan’s murder remained unresolved, and neither the family nor the public saw any will on behalf of the police or the state to solve the case.
Today, a year after your death, Ceylan, we did not forget you. We will make sure that your death will not be another unidentified murder in the history of Turkey.
